Why donate a vehicle?
Donating to Goodwill is simple, convenient, and we can help you get the maximum tax deduction for your vehicle donation. The IRS allows a donor to deduct the fair market value of the vehicle if it is sold to a low-income family at a price significantly below market value. Call Goodwill Cars to Work to discuss how you might be able to obtain the maximum allowable deduction for your vehicle and, at the same time, make a huge difference in the lives of a struggling family.Your donation supports Goodwill’s mission to provide jobs, job placement, and other services to people with disabilities or other disadvantages.

What’s in it for me?
If your donated vehicle can be used in our Goodwill Cars to Work program, you will be able to deduct the vehicle’s fair market value from your taxes. If the vehicle cannot be used in the program, it will be sold at auction. After the auction, Goodwill provides you with all necessary documents to receive your tax deduction (letter of acknowledgement, Form 1098c). Donors are allowed to deduct the amount for which the vehicle was sold with the minimum deduction being $500, in line with IRS standards. For additional information, review this brochure from the IRS about vehicle donations.

What types of vehicles does Goodwill accept?

We accept cars, trucks, boats, jet skis, golf carts, motorcycles, trailers, RVs, campers, and just about any other motor vehicle. We accept boats on trailers, but Kentucky law requires that trailers also have a title. The owner must obtain a vehicle identification number (VIN) for the trailer and then apply for and receive a title. There is no charge to apply for a VIN and a $6.00 charge to apply for a title.

How long does it take to complete the donation process?
It usually takes between five and ten minutes.

What if I have an out-of-state title?
If your title is out-of-state (other than Kentucky), you need only the clear title and keys to donate. The license plate(s) should be removed from the vehicle and kept and transferred or destroyed by the donor as a precaution.

Does my vehicle need to be running to donate?
No. We accept most vehicles but cannot accept vehicles that are wrecked beyond reasonable repair.

How long does it take to pick up a donated vehicle that is in need of a tow?
We ask that we are given seven business days from donation date; however, our tow vendor is usually at each pick-up site within a few days.

What if my vehicle is at a repair facility?
Upon donation, provide a business card for the repair facility that includes a contact name and phone number. Goodwill staff will call and verify that the vehicle is on the premises, that the facility is aware of your intention to donate the vehicle to Goodwill, and that there are no outstanding costs due to the repair facility.

Are Goodwill’s auto auctions open to the public?
Yes! Auctions are held at 962 East Chestnut Street, Louisville, KY, 40204. The auctions are held every six to eight weeks on a Saturday morning. Approximately 50 to 60 vehicles are presented for sale to the public. Vehicles are available for viewing and inspection from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on the day of the auction. The auction begins at 10:00 a.m. and usually concludes before noon, depending on how many vehicles are presented. A valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card is needed to register and obtain a bid card. There is a buyer’s fee of $25.00 assessed to each vehicle that is sold. Read the Bidder Agreement for more details.

Lexington: Please call (859) 277-CARS or (859) 277-3661 for details about attending a local auction that includes vehicles donated to Goodwill.

Notice to potential buyers: Members of the general public may attend Goodwill’s auto auction but are not encouraged to purchase vehicles unless they fully understand the risks associated with purchasing used, non-warranted vehicles. As a general rule, most vehicles donated to Goodwill Industries of Kentucky (“Goodwill”) have some sort of mechanical issue that prohibits them from being drivable or which requires immediate repair. Goodwill, including its employees, programs, and subsidiaries, is not responsible for the condition of vehicles that are donated to and purchased through the Goodwill Auto Auction. All vehicles are sold “as is” without warranty or guarantee of any kind, and Goodwill does not perform repairs or maintenance on donated vehicles. Vehicles are donated in a variety of conditions and not all vehicles are in driving condition. Goodwill is not responsible for determining the safety or road-worthiness of vehicles sold at its auctions. Buyers are encouraged to carefully inspect a vehicle before purchasing it and to use precaution when attempting to drive or move a purchased vehicle from Goodwill’s lot.

Can I view available vehicles before attending the auction?
Vehicle information and photos are listed on our website in the weeks leading up to each auction. View currently available vehicles.
